Based In Berlin, Outside Worldwide
We’re working to reverse the decline in BIPOC representation as outdoor activities become more technical, more remote, and more demanding.
Adventure
Gap?
What is it?
A term conceived by James Edward Mills to describe the persistent underrepresentation of BIPOC individuals in outdoor recreation and adventure spaces. As outdoor activities become more technical, time-intensive, or demanding, representation drops sharply. This can be due to unequal access to resources, mentorship, visibility, shared knowledge and more. The Adventure Gap highlights not a lack of interest, but a lack of pathways, support, and inclusion as the level of challenge increases.
Our Purpose
We’re focusing our attention mainly on helping people move beyond the basics: supporting the middle and advanced stages of progression through workshops, outdoor excursions, mentoring and more. Too often, people of colour are excluded as skills, challenge, and ambition increase.
We don’t want to duplicate the amazing work already happening at the grassroots level. Instead, we want to link with those efforts and strengthen the whole pathway. Our goal is a continuum of support: helping people move from first experiences to advanced outdoor spaces with confidence, community, and visible representation behind them.
Out There, In Frame
Documenting our past adventures, events, workshops and more. Representation made visible and the learnings we have had along the way.
